Local teen was killed in accidental shooting

Sheriff names man who was arrested for killing friend

A local teenager died early Sunday morning in what Dane County sheriff Kalvin Barrett called a tragic accident involving a rifle. In a press conference at noon on Wednesday, Barrett and Blue Mounds chief of police Joey Hoops filled in the details about the incident that Hoops said had the community stressed and "concerned."

At 4:52 a.m. Sunday, Dane County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to an address in the Village of Blue Mounds for a male with a reported gunshot injury. When they arrived, they found 6 people at a home located at 10840 Blue Mountain Trail, including Marshall L. Iverson, 19, of Mount Horeb, who was deceased. Their investigation showed that Iverson died after being accidentally shot by Isaiah Miller, of Madison.

Barrett called everyone in the home "cooperative" and said they all corroborated the story. Miller was taken to the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of homicide by negligent handling of a firearm and homicide by intoxicated use of vehicle or firearm. Neither the shooter nor the victim lived at the residence.

Barrett said the rifle used was an "AR-type" platform that was purchased legally and added that the tragedy could have been avoided if appropriate gun safety rules were followed.

Gun locks are available from most local law enforcement agencies, including the Mount Horeb Police Department and Dane County Sheriff's Office, for free.

A forensic autopsy was completed at the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday.

Barrett asked everyone to always follow basic gun safety guidelines:

ALWAYS Keep The Gun Pointed In A Safe Direction

ALWAYS Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until Ready To Shoot

ALWAYS Keep The Gun Unloaded Until Ready To Use
